Band

Student may audition for the MQA Band. The band performs in the Christmas and spring concerts, a Christmas band tour, and an all-band spring concert.

Students who elect to participate in chorus perform in two concerts, a Christmas concert and a spring concert.

Future City

Future City is an engineering competition where students use a community planning software called Sim City to create a city of the future. Each year has a theme that is researched and presented as an essay. A section of the city is built into a scale model and a team of students orally present the information on their city to a panel of judges. The regional competition is held in January. The first place team goes to the national competition in June.

History Day

Mrs. Casper

History Day is an academic program designed to promote student research, writing, and presentation while exploring historical themes. Students can elect to submit a historical paper, a documentary, a web site, an exhibit, or a performance. Students can work as a group or individually. The regional competition is held in March. Those receiving a first, second, or third place continue to the state level. The state competition is held in May.

PJAS and PRSEF

7th-8th

Mrs. Kestner

Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) is designed to stimulate and promote interest in science through the development of a research project and investigation, followed by a written report and an oral presentation on the findings. Students compete at the regional level and those earning a first award continue on to the state competition. The process can then be converted to a presentation board and entered in the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF).

FLL Robotics

7th-8th

Mrs. Collett

Robotics is an elective where students learn the basics of robotics programming. This includes building a robot and programming it to complete challenges. Research, presentation, and competition are all part of this elective. First Lego League (FLL) is held in December and May Madness is held in May.
