MQA Knights Sports Program
Mary Queen of Apostles School currently offers team sports including coed cross country for students in kindergarten through grade 8, basketball for students in grades 3 – 8; cheerleading for girls in grades 3 – 8, volleyball for girls in grades 3 – 8, and coed track and field for those in kindergarten through grade 8.
The teams compete within the Diocese of Greensburg Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program playing other diocesan teams formed by schools and/or parishes. In addition to the CYO season, the diocese hosts a tournament for JV and Varsity teams in cross country and basketball. A State Basketball Tournament is held with the Varsity CYO winner representing the Diocese of Greensburg at the tournament.
All students participating in our sports program in third through eighth grade need physicals dated after July 1 on the Diocese of Greensburg Youth Ministry Athletics Consent Form. The form must be signed and dated by their physician.
MQA sports are organized by volunteer athletic director, Mike Collett. Parent meetings are held prior to the start of each season. Activity fees are charged for participants and are due with the consent forms. Parents are
responsible for transporting their children to the games.
Parents or other interested adults may serve as volunteer coaches. Those coaching more than one year must attend a diocesan sanctioned clinic. All coaches must have clearances. The coaches and athletic director coordinate practice times. The practices and games are scheduled and will be listed on the school athletics calendar.
Cross Country
The cross country program is for girls and boys in kindergarten through eighth grade. It begins with practice in August. Meets are scheduled on Sundays throughout September and October. A tournament is held in October. The athletics calendar lists the practice schedule and meet dates.
Cheerleading
The cheerleading program is for students in third through eighth grade. It begins with practice in the fall. The cheerleaders cheer at all boys basketball home games and playoff games. Games are scheduled throughout December, January and February. Playoffs are held in February. The athletics calendar lists the practice schedule and game dates.
Track and Field
A coed track and field program is offered in the spring in conjunction with other Catholic schools in the Greensburg and Pittsburgh Dioceses. It is open to students in grades K-8.
Basketball
The girls basketball program is for girls in third through eighth grade. It begins with practice in August. Games are scheduled throughout September and October. Playoffs are held in November. The athletics calendar lists the practice schedule and game dates.
The boys basketball program is for boys in third through eighth grade. It begins with practice in November. Games are scheduled throughout December, January and February. Playoffs are held in February. The athletics calendar lists the practice schedule and game dates.
Girls Volleyball
The girls volleyball program is for students in third through eighth grade. It begins with practices in February. Matches are scheduled throughout March, April and May. A tournament is held in May. The athletics calendar lists the practice schedule and match dates.
Sports Program Forms
A physical/permission form is required before the start of the season. An activity fee that covers team fees, sports insurance, judge costs, and other program costs is due with the physical/permission form. These items must be in before the first game/match. A parent meeting is held before the start of the season to explain the program and CYO rules.
