Dear Parents/Guardians:
I am Jackie Fellowes, RN,a nurse paraprofessional with Catapult Learning. I look forward to working with you and the staff to promote health, safety and wellness for everyone at MQA. I work in cooperation with the school nurses at NKASD. I am at the school Tuesday through Thursday at both sites.
When your child is feeling ill, I will assess his or her complaints, and provide assistance. If, according to the protocol established by the NKASD school nurse, your child should be sent home, arrangements will be made. Remember, if your child is ill, they should not return to school unless he or she is fever free for 24 hours!
Our goal is to keep the student in class. Each site has an area for the child to rest in private until symptoms are eased.
I am also able to dispense OTC and prescrption medicines, both with doctor's orders only. No employee of MQA may dispense medicinies. Of course EPI pens and inhalers can be used and provided for such emergencies by teachers and staff. However, the doctor's orders for these things must be on file at the school. The procedure for making sure the school is permitted to dispence medicines is listed under Points to Remember for OTC/Prescription Medicine below.
On Monday and Friday and at times when I am off duty, the NKASD nurse is called to dispense medicines and assess students. The school nurse is called following the protocol provided by NKASD. They are called for eye or head injury, suspected bone fractures or breaks, loss of consciousness or fainting, seizure activity, bleeding not controlled in 5 minutes with pressure and ice, blood sugar issues with diabetic students, and any incident that requires calling 911. The faculty and staff will provide first aid as needed for other ailments or problems.
Points to Remember for OTC/Prescription Medicines
If you wish for your child to receive OTC (over the counter) medication, prescription medication, or receive emergency medication, such as an inhaler or EPI pen while at school, please complete the following:
1. Fill out the Permission for the Administration of Medicine Form.
2. Attach an order from your child's doctor.
3. Send the medication to school in the original OTC bottle or the prescription labeled bottle.
No medications can be administered by NKASD school nurse or the nurse/paraprofessional without all the things listed above.
Flu
Take time to prevent the flu! Here are some 'tips' so you don’t spread the virus to others … or they don’t spread it to you!
Wellness
Wellness includes nutrition, physical activity, health and safety, and making good choices in all these areas. MQA has a Wellness Policy that guides the food service program, school day parties and special school day rewards. It is also a guide for recess. Those who volunteer to be "MQA party parents" must use the Party Planning Guide for Preschool to Grade 5 or the Party Planning Guide for Grades 6-8. The guide will help you choose the snacks allowed and plan for physical activity or games. Another good resource for planning parties that include good nutrition and physical activity for school parties or events you plan for your families is "Healthy Celebrations" from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. It is a great guide!
